Maui County Planning Commission has recently approved rezoning to allow More Commercial/Industrial use of the land around the Kihei Wastewater Plant. This could have a negative impact on the water quality at Kihei’s favorite surfing swimming, and fishing spots. These areas are directly downstream and downslope of this industrial activity and already have compromised water quality. Surface Runoff and Industrial waste entering the treatment plant could affect the area’s environment, affect water quality, and make conditions unhealthy or unsafe for swimming. Local families who eat the fish caught in this area could also be affected. This rezoning should not have been allowed without a full EIS to assess the potential harm to the environment and nearshore waters.
