Property owners in Lahaina and Kula:
Please REPORT any unsolicited offers to the Attorney General
If you own property in zip codes 96761, 96767 or 96790, and you receive ANY solicitations from potential buyers about your property, PLEASE NOTIFY THE HAWAII ATTORNEY GENERAL. DO NOT provide the caller with any personal information. You are urged to immediately hang up the phone (or do not reply to the text or email) and call 911 or report the incident via email to the Department of the Attorney General at hawaiiAG@hawaii.gov.
Governor Green signed the Sixth Emergency Proclamation Relating to Wildfires on August 19th, and made it ILLEGAL for anyone to make an unsolicited offer to an owner of real property located in those areas. Those found guilty of the crime could face up to a year in jail, or a $5,000 fine, or both.
Solicitations may also come in the form of text message or email which specifically names your property address and include verbiage that they are trying to help those victims of the disaster. PLEASE BEWARE of this! Report ANY unsolicited offers to the Attorney General’s office.
“Preying on people who suffered the most from the tragedy on Maui is despicable,” said Attorney General Lopez. “The Department of the Attorney General will investigate all such criminal activity and hold perpetrators accountable.”
