The Kihei Beach Hotel in north Kihei is expanding its rock wall, presumably to be better protection during floods. For the past several months they have had several rows of sandbags piled along the top of their wall in case of flooding. This is Akamai planning because this area is subject to regular flooding from the adjacent Waiakoa Gulch and is predicted to become more flood-prone in the future with the impacts of ongoing climate change and SLR (sea level rise). Unfortunately, these condos were allowed to be built right on the Waiakoa estuary and a wetland so they couldn’t have chosen a more flood-prone area if they tried.
