Developer Blasting Cultural Sites and Petroglyphs
Blasting Alert!! June 1- July 1 2021, Daily at 3:45 pm Monday through Friday.
Canadian Developer, Plans to Blast an area connected with hundreds of years of Hawaiian Archeological and Cultural sites to build luxury Condos in Wailea.
WHERE: MF-7 13 ac. parcel on Okolani Street AKA “Lai’loa Condominium project”- Paeahu Blasting planned June 1-July 1 2021
In 1980 a 1-day Survey (by Bishop Museum staff) found 33 features and 1 petroglyph. Including 11 hillside terraces on the parcel. No sites were cleared of foliage- report recommended more work. Sites found were listed as part of a larger report on several parcels in Wailea resort. There was NO DETAILED STUDY in 1980. Why did the site count shrink on the parcel between 1993 & 2006? What will blasting do to these natural hills and outcrops? Natural rock formations watch over the rock shelters along the gulch will they be blasted?
WHAT WILL BE PRESERVED?
a gulch runs along the n. side of the lot and has cave shelters and some petroglyphs. Revised Preserve totals 2 acres. Original Zoning had 4.7 acres in Open space Preserved.
Recorded sites- For example, a Rock shelter our kupuna used, could be destroyed by blasting. Conservationists fear that there could be significant indirect damage to the remaining sites that are in the immediate vicinity of the blasting. Shock waves traveling through the bedrock could do far more damage than anticipated. This weeks-long blasting program could be extremely destructive to the neighboring archeological sites and features.
